Upgrade Your Driving Safety with LED Headlight Bulbs

February 21, 2018 By Jeremy Lambertson Leave a Comment

LED HeadlightDriven Sound and Security in Negaunee offers a wide variety of LED headlight bulb upgrades to make driving safer at night. Over the last few years, LED headlights have revolutionized the automotive lighting industry. LED lights offer an excellent balance of efficiency, longevity and incredible light output. Let’s look at what a set of LED upgrade bulbs can do to improve your visibility and safety.

Let’s Talk About Headlight Bulbs

There are three common types of headlight bulbs. Incandescent bulbs work on the same principle that Thomas Edison patented back in 1879. A filament inside a vacuum chamber glows white-hot when current passes through it. Incandescent bulbs are relatively inexpensive to produce and have few very components. Their downside is mediocre electrical and thermal efficiency and limited durability. Quite simply, when compared to newer technologies, they aren’t as bright and don’t last as long.

High-Intensity Discharge lighting systems use a glass bulb that contains two tungsten electrodes. A high-voltage power supply creates an electrical arc between these electrodes to produce light. HID lighting systems are recognized for their strong output capabilities and white color. Their downside is their cost and complexity. HID bulbs require an external ballast and controller to function.

The latest type of headlight bulb solution is LED. Light emitting diodes create light through a process called electroluminescence. LEDs are simple, reliable and efficient. Thanks to ongoing research and innovations in construction, LEDs are quickly becoming the lighting source of choice for new vehicles.

LED Headlight Upgrades

LED HeadlightIf your vehicle has incandescent (or Halogen) bulbs, then a new set of LED bulbs can provide a dramatic improvement in light output. In most applications, LED bulbs reach their full output intensity almost twice as fast as incandescent bulbs, making them a suitable upgrade for high-beam applications.

LED bulbs mimic the light source of an incandescent design, making them compatible with most lighting assemblies. Proper bulb design is an extremely important consideration. Have you ever been blinded by an oncoming vehicle that has the wrong kind of aftermarket headlight kit installed? Chrysler minivans and last-generation Honda Civics are notorious for this.

The beam pattern produced by your lighting system is as important as the amount of light the bulbs produce. Having light pointing up into the sky will blind oncoming drivers and serves no useful purpose. Too much light right in front of your vehicle is also unwanted. You need light pointed down the road, allowing you to see obstacles and have time to react.
