A local Jeep dealership recently contacted Driven Sound and Security about a 2018 Jeep Compass paint correction project. The Jeep had 41 miles on the odometer, but that paint looked like it had 410,000. It was scratched, scuffed and full of swirl marks, like someone had washed it with a doormat. After assessing the finish, we gave the dealership a quote to repair and protect the vehicle. They gave us the go-ahead to start the restoration.
Paint Surface Decontamination
Before we started to repair the paint, the first step was to make sure it was clean. We hosed down the vehicle and sprayed it with a strong decontaminating soap. This soap will remove any dust or dirt that has settled on the paint finish. Once the paint was clean, we assessed each panel using a bright LED light and came up with a plan to start the repair.
Automotive Paint Surface Repair
Depending on the severity of the scratches, we used 1500 and 3000 grit sandpaper to remove and feather any scratches in the clear coat. Once the surface was smooth, we switched to a heavy-cut polishing compound to remove the sanding marks. We used a dual-action polishing to ensure the surface was covered evenly and efficiently.
After a final inspection of the damage repair, we moved to the polishing stage. We use a fine micro-polishing compound to smooth the surface so that it’s even and ready for a jeweling finish that will bring out depth and clarity in the paint surface.
Gtechniq Ceramic Coating
The last step in this Jeep Compass paint correction project was to apply a ceramic coating that would make the vehicle easy to keep clean. We wiped down the entire vehicle using Gtechniq panel wipes to remove any waxes, oils or contaminants left by the repair process. Next, we coated the Compass from head to toe with Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra and let it sit in our wash bay for 24 hours to cure fully. This curing time ensures the surface remains contaminant free as the coating sets up. The next day we applied a layer of Gtechniq Liquid Crystal to enhance the gloss and clarity of the paint further. Liquid Crystal also enhances the hydrophobic properties of the vehicle and makes it much easier to keep clean.
