What Are HID Lights?
HID (high intensity discharge) lighting is a very popular product here at Driven Sound & Security. These lights became popular in the early 2000’s on luxury vehicles and have now made it to the mainstream. They put out a light that is much closer to sunlight than a normal automotive headlight bulb. This is accomplished by using a ballast that dramatically raises the operating voltage of the bulb, allowing it to use a gas that could not be fired by a 12 volt electrical system. The result is a much whiter light that allows you to see much better at night. Did you ever wonder why you could see a black dog walking across blacktop just fine during the day, but you could not see it at night? It is because your headlight bulbs are putting out a yellowish light that hinders your ability to differentiate between the dog and the road. The whiter light of the HID systems is much safer.
HID Lighting Colors
HID lighting also comes in many different colors. If you want the highest performance, we will install a light of 6000k which is a white light. As you move up the Kelvin scale, the lights go from light blue to blue, to almost purple. As the color temperature increases, the safety improvement goes down.
HID Reliability
In the past, HID’s were a product category that has earned a bad reputation for reliability. Does that mean you should stay away from having HID lighting installed in your vehicle? No. What it does mean is that you want a shop that will supply you with high-quality products and back it up with a great installation. For starters, probably 90% of the products on the market are sub-par, plain and simple. We have tried dozens and dozens of products and have chosen what we feel are the most reliable kits on the market.
Reliable HID Lighting Installation from Driven SS
A factor in HID reliability as well as product quality is the installation. We securely mount the ballasts, unlike our competition, who just leave them dangling from the wiring harness. We loom all the wiring for extra protection, and we use dielectric grease to protect the connections from corrosion. Driven Sound & Security even goes so far as to heat shrink all the connections for an added measure of reliability. The result is an installation that is done to the same standard as the car manufacturer themselves.
